Much Improved from Yesterday!
Untitled (for now)
20" x 30"
Acrylic on canvas
This is the same painting from yesterday. Very little of that painting is evident now. I am so much happier with it - it has energy and life now. It is very, very purple, and darker than I would prefer...I find that happens in my work quite often...almost as if I have no control over the lightness or darkness of it. Hmmm. Maybe I will devise a project around that problem - well, not problem maybe, rather challenge. Anyway, here is today's offering, my labor of the day. So much more rewarding than yesterday! Now for the name - it seems to mean something, when I look at it like it is trying to tell me it's name - but I am not getting it yet. Do you have a name suggestion?

Sharing my Frustration
This painting is becoming a nightmare for me. It started out as a representational cityscape. Seriously. I have been working - and this is what I have to show for it. BLECH!! I will take a nap and go back to it later. But for now I just wanted to show you that I HAVE been working - but obviously not every painting is a hit and boy this one sure isn't right now.

Totally Not Art Related and Unplugging
Every now and then I run into some bit of nonsense that appeals to me for some random reason - and here is one of those things for today. Completely useless, yet somehow interesting. I admit I was a bit thrilled when I typed in my youngest daughter's name and found that there are fewer than 6 - and maybe no one else with her name. There is just something really appealing to me about uniqueness in what ever form it show up - even a name.
If this doesn't show up in your email - (for those of you who subscribe by email) - you will need to click on the name of my blog (above) and it will redirect you to my blog so you can try this out - if you are interested, that is. Or just go to http://nsdavisart.blogspot.com
And now a thought or two about unplugging.
I am thinking about doing it - and by that I mean getting rid of Facebook, Twitter, all of my other blogs, and just focusing on one combined blog and website. I have been thinking about doing it for a while now. Seems like a good idea, I mean I can always come back to it. Actually I have been thinking about doing it for quite a while. So WHY - WHY - WHY can't I bring myself to do it? Is this like some sort of addiction? I can't for the life of me figure out why I love technology and playing in cyberspace so much. It is intriguing and baffling...the emotions that come with the thought of unplugging - from excitement and anticipation to grief and dread. It is just craziness. Really. It's not that big of a deal and I know it. So why won't I just do it? I think it is a bit like giving up on a puzzle before it is solved, or putting down a mystery book before you find out who did it. I am moving closer and closer to unplugging. I will keep this blog and my art www.nsdavisart.com - and let the rest go.
Just think how much more time I would have to actually paint!

Back in the Studio
Catalog Series #8
Acrylic on paper
approx 11" x 11"
Wow. I don't even know what to say about this one. They always look so different to me when I see them online. It helps me a lot - for some reason all of the weakness that I didn't see seem to pop right out at me.
I am back in the studio after quite a few weeks. I've lost track. We had a death in the family and I had to run off to Ohio for a while. My Mom's companion of 50 years passed rather suddenly - or maybe I should say unexpectedly. He was 90, but very active and in pretty good shape. He was the closest thing I had to a father since my Dad died when I was a little girl. He was not a warm and fuzzy, cuddly kind of guy - but you could always count on him.
Once again - my life is turned upside down and inside out. Every time I think I am starting to get a grip and a plan and things are running more smoothly - WHAM! I guess that is normal though - I seem to hear it from an awful lot of people.
So I am back in the studio, trying to continue with the Catalog Series. Trying to get going again. Trying to get some painting done as I will be going back to Ohio for about 3 weeks in May. This painting is probably not finished - I have 5 of these in progress right now. After seeing it posted here I am nearly certain it is not finished. But I wanted to get back to painting and posting and it feels good!

These pictures aren't the greatest. Sorry about the glare, I am taking these right as I finish them and they are still quite wet. They are good enough to give you the idea I think. I like this one - it is probably the closest to the direction where I think I want to ultimately go - at least that is what I think today, right now. Tomorrow may be another whole different thing. I like the smeary edges and pencil work. This is a good exercise and I am getting ideas. Yay!

These are in no particular order. They were just sitting on the drying rack and I snapped a pic of them. I like them. I can't wait to move them around and figure out how the 4 of them work best together - but not til they are good and dry - which will be quite a while because there is a lot of white and it's a little bit thick. White always takes a long time to dry.

Catalog Series 1 (on left) and 2 (on right)
Both are oil on canvas board
6" x6"
Nothing deep and meaningful going on here - I don't think. These are just fun little decorative pieces and kind of cute. They would make a nice diptich to light up a dull corner or nook somewhere. I think they will look best in a nice, simple, clean black frame.
Please leave a comment or email me - I'd love to have your feedback.

Studio tour video and thinking out loud
In my last post I told you I was reorganizing my studio. Well I did - sort of. I am not finished, but I've made a good start. So I thought I would make a little video tour of my studio, which I did. That lead to another whole set of problems. It would not upload to YouTube because my camera shoots in .MOV - or at least that is what I think the reason is. I have a nice Canan Powershot SD780 which is supposed to shoot HD videos, as well as my iphone which shoots videos too, but I never seem to remember that. So I began looking at Flip cameras, which led me to consider the Kodak Zi8. That led me to start looking at bigger, more elaborate camcorders. What should I get? Panasonic at Costco becasue it seems to be a good deal? Canon? Sony? Research - research - research! Frames per second, size, weight, touch screen or not, 1080P or 780P, sound and microphones, flash or hard drive and what kind and how much, battery type and life and on and on. Hours and hours and hours. Maximum confusion! I still don't have an answer, or a camcorder.
I then decided this whole thing was spinning out of control - as is my pattern. A few years back I wanted a Vespa scooter to run to and from work, and do errands. Just a cute, nice, economical little scooter. That spun out of control. I ended up with a Virago 750 - so NOT a scooter! I promptly went out and got in a wreck. Yep - that's what I do. If I want a sheet of paper I am likely to end up with a 50 foot roll of it. I am not sure why I do this - but I am working on it.
So back to the saga. I tried a few free online file converters to no avail, just a lot of time spent (I refuse to think of it as wasted time). Way to complicated, huge learning curve. I went and bought Corel Video Express software to edit and convert from .MOV to .MP4 and it turns out my laptop was too full to install it. Figured that out after about two hours or more of trying, more learning. So I tried to install it on my desk top. It installed great and I thought finally I am on my way. Nope. The video card is too old and not compatible, I need new one. Back to my laptop. I took programs and files off my laptop and burned them to CD's and DVD's - time consuming - and FINALLY got the Corel software installed and the studio tour video converted and uploaded to You Tube.
So here it is - so not worth the effort! But I am putting it here anyway after all of this effort - darn it! I learned a few things in the process:
1. Don't rotate my camera to shoot video. You then have to turn your monitor sideways to watch it - or rotate the video clip in editing...and then it doesn't fit on the screen very nicely. Better to just shoot it right.
2. Video editing seems way more complicated than photo editing.
3. I tend to over do and complicated things - well, I already knew that so I didn't actually learn it - just very much reminded of this tendency, again.
4. I am freaking TIRED of learning curves! I never EVER in my life thought I would get to a point in my life where I would say - I do NOT want to learn anything else - for a while. I need a week or a amonth or something of just vegging out. I live for learning, I eat, drink, dream and breathe learning - but I am just tired and weary of it for a while.
5. The first quarter of 2010 is almost over and I am still at the starting line spinning my wheels.
6. I want a Mac...

Encouragement on a dreary day
April Game of San Diego Fine Art Society posted this on Facebook and when I saw it this morning I knew I just had to share it with you too!
It is a very gray and dreary morning here in San Diego, although the sun is just now starting to poke out. I don't do well with gray and dreary mornings, mentally or physically. It is much better for me to wake up to sunshine and then have the day become gray and ugly than to wake up without sunshine. I really think I am solar operated, and on gray days my solar powered batteries deplete almost immediately! Or maybe I don't even have batteries at all and am just straight solar powered - no sun - no energy.
Anyway - I don't keep up with my Facebook as regularly as I should - but I am glad I saw this.
or CLICK HERE if it doesn't show up in your email
or cut and paste this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-EMOb3ATJ0
By the way - I have been working in my studio. Not painting - but rearranging the whole thing - trying to make it function better, and a more pleasant place to be. I may post some photos later.

What I Learned
What I learned is this: while I believe in resurrection, but some things just ought to die and stay dead. The sunflower painting is one of those things. I started painting on the sunflowers and was just so unhappy with it and I felt so much had to be fixed - why bother? Why am I making myself miserable? For what? I could just start over. Then I thought - hmmmm, let's see what happens if I try to scrape and clean this off. I scraped off all the oil paint I could, nothing interesting or inspiring happened. I tried wiping more off with solvent and paper towels. Still nothing inspiring or anything I wanted to work with. I then decided I would try to scrub the rest off. Why not? Nothing to lose, it is a piece of Masonite and could take a good scrubbing. I put it in the sink and hit it with some Spray n Wash. I could see it starting to cut through the oil film. Then I pulled out the trusty Murphy's Oil Soap - poured some on and started spreading it around with my hands. It just started melting away. As the water got warmer and warmer the acrylic underneath - especially the areas with thicker paint began to peel away and float off. I kept at it, then I realized the gesso primer underneath was starting to soften and come off too. That's when I quit. I left some of the acrylic on for texture and as an experiment - I wanted to see how it would dry, although I had a pretty good idea. I do believe that with a little more elbow grease and determination I could have taken this piece of Masonite back to a pristine bare-naked surface.
What I learned in a nut shell:
1. We can all be glad that I am not God. LOL -He doesn't give up on us when He gets aggravated and maybe thinks there is nothing there to work with - or that we are not worth His effort.
2. While the sunflower image is lost and not resurrected, there is transformation taking place, and the surface has been resurrected in a way. It's like "all it's sin is washed away" - leaving some of the residual consequences. Now there is a clean surface ready for a new start as something more beautiful and purposeful in life. Just like people.
3. I find God-sightings and spiritual metaphors everywhere and in everything. LOL
4. I learned I can remove oil paint completely enough so that I can now use this board for acrylics or anything else, and not worry about the paint not sticking. That decision needs to be made pretty early though - before the oil paint has dried completely, and it gets really hard to remove. There's a metaphor in that too.
5. Spray N Wash, Murphy's Oil Soap and hot water is a great combination.
Tomorrow is another day and a new start, on a surface that was once old and ruined and is now fresh and clean and new again.

Do I Post What I Hate?
I guess the answer to that is "Yes." Yes, I do post what I hate.
I got an email from my brother. After seeing the red poppies on my blog, he asked if could I paint sunflowers? I am not sure if he was joking or not, but I replied "of course." Right? Of course I can paint sunflowers.
The more I thought about it, the more I thought -"Fun - that will be fun - I will paint sunflowers." After all. I am in a kind of a flowery mood, spring is arriving, I had a great time with the tulip paintings at Hyatt Moore's workshop, and I had fun with the little red poppy painting- why not? I'll paint sunflowers.
So I found a reference photo and started this in acrylics, trying to stay loose and free. I hated it! I made mud, I made muck, I made mush, I made a mess. The more I tried the worse it got. I made such a mess of it that I decided maybe I could salvage it in oils. So I began working in oils, trying to stay nice and loose and free, thinking whimsical - make it whimsical.
I finally threw my brushes down and went to bed hating! Hating every second of this particular painting session. Bummed becasue I wanted to start posting to my blog every day again and now I was going to miss a day before I had barely even started.
I didn't even want to go in and look at this today. It is still on the easel and still in progress. I don't hate it quite so much today, I think it is salvageable. But it raises questions for me...
I have spent my life striving to paint like people I admire and respect and not painting like me - what ever that is. I want to know what that is. How does one unlearn a lifetime of learning? How do you overwrite all of that programing? And with what? I get tight and realistic when I want to be free and loose and more absract, I hear lots of artists say that, so it is a bit of a universal problem I think. I set out to do a certain thing like to do whimsical, I really want to, but then I don't seem to be able to - is that becasue it's not me? Is it old scripts, old programs running? an old habit? I am not sure. Maybe it's just a bad day? A bad painting session? Maybe I didn't prepare properly? I don't know.
For now I see myself finishing this painting in a more representational style - and then maybe I will tackle it again and see what happens.
One thing I have realized. that in spite of my best efforts to make a comfortable studio space - it is not. not by any means at all. It's nearly unworkable. And that may be a contributing factor, adding to my discomfort, frustration and aggravation. Today I think I will try to do something about my space...again. How I wish I could afford a real studio space, but I am blessed to have what I have - I just need to find a way to make it work better.

Painting of a painting
Poppies
6" x 12"
Acrylic on board
I saw this little painting flipping through an old book on acrylic painting techniques. It was in the introduction section. I liked it because it breaks all the rules: one item centered on the canvas, the horizon line is at the halfway mark and top edge of the vase aligns right with that horizon line. Ha! Take that "Rules" !
I just thought it was a cute and happy little painting and I enjoyed painting it, just for fun.

Paintings from the Hyatt Moore Workshop
So here are the two paintings from the Hyatt Moore workshop I took over the past weekend in San Clemente, held at the San Clemente Art Supply Store a little less than an hour from my home. A charming and very complete supply store. I enjoyed this little workshop very much. Hyatt is an excellent communicator as well as painter and a fun guy to be around. The "Loosen Up" workshop had actual content, planning and preparation, unlike some of the others I have taken where it is just not much more than to go paint with people and maybe have a critique. This one was useful and fun.
Above is what I would consider a quick sketch. It is acrylic on paper and not intended as a finished painting although it certainly could be. I do like it, there are some things I wish I had done differently - but then that is true of every painting I do. The image size is about 12" x 14.5"
This is a completed painting I guess. Again there are some areas that I am not satisfied with, but I guess not disturbed enough to repaint it. In my quest to stop being a crazy perfectionist - which ALWAYS ruins my painting - I am working at stopping at "good enough". At least that way I don't over paint and over work the image until it is absolutely dead. This way it may have "personality quirks" but at least it still has some life to it too. Or that is what I tell myself these days. It is 22" x 28" and is acrylic and charcoal on canvas.

2010 - New Decade - Big Changes
Yep - there are some big changes a-foot for me. I have been spending a lot of time and putting a lot of effort and prayer and thought into some serious soul searching, goal setting and planning.
Before I get into that - if I even do - I want to tell you I MISSED you guys!! It has been a very long time since we have met together here in blog-world, or cyber-space. Thank you friends and followers - for hanging in there with me and being patient.
Here is a little bit about some of the changes. You will just have to watch and see some of them as they take place, becasue even I don't know what they look like yet.
Oh, where to start? Let me do it this way:
1. In a nut shell, I have been contemplating giving up painting on any real serious or regular basis and pursuing business or something else. So far painting has not been all that profitable for me. I was building a business and an income on eBay when I listened to "Nay-Sayers" that criticized my doing it and discouraged me from selling on eBay and so, against my greater desire, I backed off that. I am sorry I listened to them. However - that is water under the bridge.
The fact is I love to paint, I love to make things, I love art. It is a gift that God has given me - I cannot neglect it. So I am not quitting.
2. However, I really enjoy people and I really enjoy business. Being a studio artist can be very, very isolating. I want more people interaction in my life - real, live, warm, breathing, sit across the table and touch them kind of people. While I love my internet friends and appreciate you all - I need more live humans in my life to be balanced and happy. That is another gift that God has given me and I can't neglect that either.
3. I love playing on the internet and spend WAY too many hours doing it. I am intrigued by the idea of making money by being online, I am intrigued by network marketing. I am curious. I think it can work to supplement my income, thus taking some of the pressure off my artistic endeavors, allowing me to be even more experimental and free in my art.
4. I am a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, my Lord, my God, my Savior, my All. Don't freak out - I am not going to beat you with my Bible - LOL. But the fact is I am a believer and it is an enormous part of who I am. The truth is I have tried pretty hard to avoid saying to much "religious" stuff on my blog for fear of offending anyone. That will end right here.
5. I am politically interested and active. I am a conservative with some libertarian leanings. Or maybe I am a libertarian with heavy conservative leanings. Not sure how to categorize me but I am patriotic - I LOVE my country, I love our Constitution and Bill of Rights and I will fight for it. Again - I have kept my political views pretty much separate from my art. The majority of the art community are liberals and progressives, and I am sorry to say I have lost a few "friends" from posting my political comments here. I will probably continue to keep my views separate - you can always check my "I May Not Be A Genius, But...." blog. On the other hand...maybe not, we will see.
6. I have been spending a ridiculous amount of time and energy trying to keep my art, my spirituality, and my businesses all separate. I was afraid that my art friends would be annoyed and bored with my business endeavors, and my business friends wouldn't care at all about my art, and any spiritual or religious aspects would just annoy everyone. It has made me feel very fragmented - and it just makes so much more work for myself.
So I guess it all boils down to this: I am a believer who is a full time artist with an interest in the health and wellness industry, and also network marketing. That is me and that is who I am. It might be a little bit of a strange mix, or maybe not, it is what it is.
I am going to be working to get all of "me" merged into mostly one place. I do not yet know how I will be doing this but I will be doing it - watch and see what happens.
I have not been painting. As I said I have been contemplating, praying, seeking, trying to figure out how to organize and put this all together into one cohesive whole me, or thing, whatever. I don't have all the answers yet. But since God won't drive a parked car, I have put myself in drive and I am moving. It will be an adventure to see where this all takes me.
You will be seeing much more abstract work from me. I have to - and I mean I HAVE to - finish the Joyful-Joyful project. I will probably continue the traditional Hymns painting series - I already have another hymn in mind for after Joyful-Joyful. My paintings will be changing I think - much more intuitive - we will see, won't we?
I am THRILLED to announce that I have lost 36.6 pounds as of today and have 21.6 more pounds to go to reach my tentative goal. I feel great and I look pretty darn good - at least compared to where I was. If any of you are interested in what I am doing to lose the weight please email me. I have information and a link for where you can get the product I use. I am an affiliate for this product, I get a small commission. My affiliate agreement does not permit t me to post the link anywhere on line - so email me for it. That is the only way I can get the information to you. It is amazing how effective and easy this has been. Eventually there will be a permanent reminder about it on this site.
Also I found an incredible new product called SoZo, made from the fruit of the coffee plant that is just amazing. It is loaded, and I mean loaded with anti-oxidants. Like 625 times the anti-oxidants of blueberries. One 3 oz serving of this tasty beverage is the equivalent of 16-20 servings of fruits and vegetables. The testimonials of people who have been using it are pretty incredible. There will be links to that on my site in the near future, until then check out www.sozolife.com/nsdavis or www.nathaliedavis.com (still under construction but should be up and running any day now - there are links there now that will take you to more information) or just email me.
I think one of my first goals is to start making enough income from SoZo, my online network marketing, and of course my paintings, to be able to rent a big studio space in a very public place where I can paint and still have people around me a lot. I don't get lonely and I don't have problem being alone, but when I can go a month or more without ever leaving my house - I wouldn't even have to get dressed if I didn't want to - well, that really isn't the way I want to live anymore. I am not complaining - there are things I really like about that lifestyle - I just want more now.
That is more than enough for now. I don't have a painting but I can't leave you without a picture of some sort.
The grounds were just stunning with neatly trimmed blooming bougainvillea hedge rows everywhere. I can't believe I got these picture without people in them - what luck! Although they said the resort was full and the place was huge - it never seemed crowded at all.
I have no idea how many pools there are at this place - but this vanishing edge pool was the one closest to our room. It was cool to see cruise ships come in several times. We had a wonderful time. even though we had never been to Cabo San Lucas, we never left the premises. We had seminars for most of the morning and we just relaxed and chilled and visited with amazing people we met there. We had a great time.

Fun Video - Update and Weight Loss
Ok This is just a little piece of fun!
Use this link if the video doesn't show up for those of you who get this by email.
http://video.telegraph.co.uk/services/player/bcpid1137883380?bctid=17075685001
I haven't given up art - although it may seem like it. I have found two "somethings" and I am absolutely hog-wild-crazy about both. One involves my building a new business. My husband and I have pioneering spirits and have been entrepreneurs to one degree or another for the past 32 years. Mostly he has been at the helm and I have been the support system. This time it is role reversal! - I am at the helm of this business and he is supporting me! Fun - fun - fun!! This is really the most enthusiastic about a new endeavor I have been in ages! The product is so superior and good for you that I think every one on the planet should be consuming it. This is just energizing me and I feel more excited and alive than I have in years, and I actually expect the new life and energy to show up in my art. I am committed to finishing the Joyful Project and having a show with the entire body of work, so I am eager- and planning - to start painting again very soon! Probably after Christmas though.Ugh - Christmas! This year it just feels like a monkey on my back and a big distraction. I am working hard to tame the "Christmas Monkey" and take time to enjoy the season - but this year I just have things that I want to do more.
Also, and this is the second thing I am crazy about - in the last nine weeks I have lost 32.6 pounds, an average of 3.6 lbs a week, a half pound per day. I just passed my halfway point and I still have a ways to go to meet my goal, but this is truly is a blessing from God - a miracle - at least for me it is. I was considering a lap band and beginning research on it when I was introduced to this and decided to give it one last try. I have spent thousands - probably even in the tens of thousands - on Doctors and Rx and various programs trying to lose weight - to no avail. This is NOT a business - but I know how hard it is to struggle with your weight and have NOTHING work - this does. And it does at and extremely reasonable cost...and it is pretty darn easy! Weight is such an emotional and private issue - it has taken me this long to decide to write about it in my blog - but if doing so can help someone else then it is well worth it. I will be more than happy to share what I am doing with anyone who would like to know just email me privately at nsdavisart at aol dot com - be sure to put "weight loss" or something in the subject line so it doesn't get confused with spam.

Go Check This Out!!
This is a very wonderful and thought provoking painting. Be sure to go HERE to see it. Move your curser over the painting to read about it. Also BE SURE to read the explanations below the painting.
While this painting is not my personal taste - I LOVE it. I love the point it makes, the story it tells and the courage of the artist. As a believing Christian, politically conservative artist I often feel very alone and isolated. There often seems like there are not many of us out there. I applaud any and every effort to express these ideals in your painting. Check out the rest of the web site while you are there too.

Careening off in another direction
Seriously.
My life has hit an oil slick and sent me careening off into an entirely different direction than I was going - or ever imagined I would go.
I fell into a business opportunity that is just way too good to pass up. A product that I not only believe in - I am pretty much crazy about! (Learn more here) So I have been on a giant roller coaster of a learning curve with that.
And if that isn't enough I got accepted into the San Diego Fine Art Society's new cutting edge mentoring program. I am thrilled and will start that in December, so I have a little time to get my self together for that. I am super-duper stoked about this. This is a make-it-or-break-it-life-or-death type of endeavor and undertaking for me.
After years of trying everything under the sun, I tried one last thing before I started looking for a lap band clinic and I have found a diet protocol that is actually WORKING for me! I am now losing an average of 0.6 pounds per day! I have actually lost just slightly less than 20 lbs so far. Tomorrow is the start of week 5 on it for me. It is effective and easy and I do NOT get hungry. (to learn more email me: nsdavisart at aol.com)
I just started a Bible study and photography class before all of this happened too - so, Wow! My head is spinning.
Today we went to Dia De Los Muertos at the San Luis Rey Mission. It was wonderful - tons of people there. It used to be held in the streets of Oceanside - but moving it to the mission was an excellent idea . It was natural and open and organic. My husband desribed the atmosphere as being like what it might have been years ago, when the people would bring their goods to sell at the mission or have their celebrations there.. It was just wonderful.
So while my life is careening out of control I thought I'd share these pictures of some of the cars that were there.. (These are for you Bill)
Bear with me - I will get back to painting very soon - I need to figure out a way to balance my life and I am working on that...
Remember - if you double click an image it will open to a larger image.
