and now for the art and pictures---

Worried Man
Digital Tessellation

Blue Bird
Digital Mosaic Experiment

So I have spent the ENTIRE day in this stupid chair trying to figure these Painter assignments out. I thought I was doing great until I ran headlong into a virtual digital wall!! When I say all day - I mean all day! I sat down here around 5AM and it is now 6:15 PM. I did take a lunch break. I thought I would just get a little bit done before my oil painting class this morning, since I was up so early, and the next thing I knew it was almost 11 and I was still in my PJ's plugging away on this digital stuff. Class started at 10 AM - duh...and BUMMER! The good news is I am just about caught up - just one more assignment and I am there! YAY! I am not thrilled with either of these images - but after working my fanny flat in this chair - I wanted to at least post something.

Then I got an email from a friend who took pictures at the wedding - thank you VERY much - here are a few -

Pictures are wonderful - but they just don't capture everything - like all the crystal and rhinestones sparkling, and the incredible ambiance and atmosphere. It was wonderful and beautiful beyond words...

Variation on a theme

So, lot's of reading and studying and catching up on lectures from my Painter class. I did a lot of "test drives" today, nothing much to look at, just trial and error attempts with different controls in the Painter program. I did do some manipulation and experimenting on the skull painting from last week and here are the results - not too great, I prefer the original, but I am learning a lot!
Tomorrow is another day.

Second post for today with another digital painting

I don't have a name for this one yet. I am fairly happy with it - there are some problem areas and some stuff that I am not crazy about - but "good enough", especially for now - I am working hard to catch up in my Painter class. I will address them when I paint this one on canvas. I will just consider this a preliminary sketch for a larger painting. Another assignment down - many more to go! LOL

Digital Assignment and Tales from my Past

I just had to show you this - I am so happy with it. It is a digital painting done for my university Painter class. So FUN! I was inspired by some work by Jim Morphesis. I may make some prints available.

Those of you who know me - even well, may or may not be aware of my love for and fascination with bones. I used to collect them - much to my mother's, and my brother's frustration and despair. I am sure they secretly worried about me becoming some kind of serial killer or something. I was crushed and devastated when my bone collection "accidentally" got thrown out one day.

In high school I got a job in a grocery store that had it's own butcher. I got some incredibly awesome bones from them. I would go home and and soak them in lye until they were all clean and beautiful. Then I would draw them - like landscapes to me. I had a particularly prized and beautiful knee joint from a cow, complete with the knee cap. It was awesome. In college I took it to drawing class, as strangely enough I had a drawing teacher that also appreciated bones. She fell in love with my cow's knee and asked to borrow it for a while. That is the last I ever saw of it.

Later, again while in college, I roasted a turkey - and carefully preserved it's complete structure. It was beautiful and perfect and I looked forward to drawing all of it little ribs and the intricacies of it. I picked it clean (while I love bones - I hate meat and am repelled and disgusted by having to touch meat -ick - but I am not a vegetarian, I will eat meat, I just don't want to look at it or touch it) anyway, I put it up on the counter to lye treat later, and ran an errand. When I got home my dog had managed to get that turkey skeleton off of the counter and devoured most of it!

I got busy and discouraged, thinking I was not meant to be a collector and gave up my bone collecting for good. I've tried to collect other things. Crystal Christmas ornaments, but the kids pulled the tree over when they were little - onto a ceramic tile floor - and that was the end of that collection. Tried to get interested in stamps, coins, antiques. I had a blue cobalt glass collection once - but it disappeared somehow, lost in a move I suppose. The only other thing I have ever had success at collecting is paint chips from the paint store, I love them. My family thinks I am nuts.

But now.... now....maybe....just maybe I can return to my beginnings. I do have a deer skull with antlers, and a steer skull up on my walls, and a beautiful shofar - not bone technically, but horn - it still works for me...maybe I will start collecting bones again. We will see.

Shondra again and I DID it!!

Shondra (2)
11" x 14"
Oil on Masonite

I am so freakin' proud of myself! I did it! I got up this morning, exercised a little bit, did my Spanish lesson and PAINTED, before getting wrapped up in my digital assignment. I finished Shondra, the painting I started on Tuesday morning and I am pretty darn happy with it - not perfect but "good enough." As a Recovering Perfectionist - "good enough" is my goal- I am proud of me for finishing something too - something I seldom do!
Hmmm - I just remembered the verse "pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall" - but I think this is an OK kind of pride....maybe I should say I am happy with myself today - actually that's more accurate anyway - (whew)
Now my only problem is - I am out of time for today and I didn't get my digital assignment work done and I have a GRADE depending on that. Always something huh. Hmmmm... I don't know what I am going to do about that - but all in all I am pretty happy with today - tomorrow will be better I hope. Tomorrow I shoot for this: getting up - exercising - Spanish - do a small still life and then do my digital assignment. I think I can do it!
I am looking forward to tomorrow - and more art making... YAY!

Aggravating Day and "Star"

Star
8" x 10"
Mixed Media Collage on canvas
$250

Here is another older work. These pices just got back from a show at the Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook. Unfortunately I never got to go see the show as i was busy with the wedding. It is a nice gallery in a very cute and arty town - a nice place to visit for a day.

Today was so aggravating! I am trying to catch up in my digital painting class and my Painter program simply won't cooperate. I spent the entire day un-installing - reinstalling - removing programs - deleting files - blah blah blah. Didn't even get into the studio and I had such great plans for today. I have emailed Corel about the problem, and will have to wait a couple of days for a response and then probably have to call the Geek Squad anyway. I have loaded the program on my desk top now - but it has limited options, maybe I can at least get one assignment underway and begin to catch up. Tomorrow is another day...tomorrow I will PAINT first! then work on the digital stuff. I have plans for a large - maybe 4' x 5' - "corporate portrait" of my husband and I am eager to get going on it. I need to get some exercise in here somewhere too - Okay , exercise first, paint second - digital third. We will see...

Back to Portrait Painting Class

Shondra 11/14/2008
11" x 14"
Oil on Masonite

It felt so good to get back to class! I just love the people and atmosphere and Shondra is an excellent model. I always enjoy painting her, and she has the MOST adorable little boy named Renoir. Incredibly cute little boy.
This is an unfinished 3 hour quick sketch -but I like the start so I may finish it.

Prince Charming Weds Fairytale Princess!

...and this is where I've been and what I've been doing the last 2 months. No silly - I didn't get married - but my daughter did! We put this together in about 8 weeks and it was awesome - wonderful - perfect- beautiful - amazing - fairytale like - magical - shall I go on? OK, didn't think so.

That's my daughter and my new son at their wedding last Saturday. I am pretty sure you will be seeing more photos from the wedding down the road. It was a perfect and beautiful wedding and reception. The only thing missing were Disney bluebirds of happiness flitting around. If I ever get caught up with everything I am going to Photoshop them in! I am woefully behind in practially everything - but so worth it! Until I get going again I am going to post a few of my older pieces that I have not posted before, and here is the first.

No Gains Without Pain
8" x 10"
mixed media collage on canvas

I named it "No Pains Without Gains" because there is a snippet of Ben Franklin's quote on the text in the collage - and it seemed to fit.

Digital Work

I am taking two online classes at Palomar Community College. One is Painter and the other is web development. I did this cherry as my first assignment in my painter class. I basically used this ACEO painting as my model - becasue it was right here on my desk in front of me and I wanted to see how the digital oil painting might look compared to the real thing. It doesn't compare, however I am just learning. I actually like the colors in the digital one a little better maybe. It was fun to do - but it is very complicated and awkward. I find it very difficult to get the effects and colors I want and it's hard to find my way around the program. But - yes - I LOVE it. All of the discomfort and awkwardness will go away as I learn more- and boy there is a TON to learn in this program!
As for the other class - the web development class - the jury is out on that one. The so-called "teacher" hasn't taught a darn thing - no syllabus, his spelling and grammar is atrocious. He has put up the first assignment with absolutely no explanation - not even the pages or chapters to read in the text. We are supposed to test the web page before we submit it to him - ha! Test it how? What web page? How do you make this web page? This makes me very angry - I am hoping it will get better - if not I will be writing complaints to the dean and the president of the college and anyone else I can think of!

San Diego Fine Art Society Painting Donation

Butterfly Drink -- 6" x 12" -- Acrylic on Canvas
Yay - I got the last one finished - I just have to varnish it. I decided to do it in acrylic as I was afraid that the oil wouldn't be dry enough in time. I love this painting! Man - I am loving my paintings a lot lately - that is SO unusual!

Nathalie S Davis Daily Painting a Day - Still Catching Up and some Pear Paintings

See? - I have been doing my daily paintings too...well, mostly, but not actually daily I guess. Each one of these are 6" x 6" and oil on either canvas panel or Masonite. I am catching up. I have not put these on eBay so if you are interested in purchasing them you will have to email me. I have not resolved the eBay vs gallery dilemma yet. I think eBay is so much fun - but I will have to significantly raise my prices if I continue with the galleries. Hmmmm.....there is an answer to this - I just have to find it. I will.

This Gala is on Saturday August 23rd - the same night as the "Change" show at Studio 2nd Street . I hope I can make it to both shows that night, that will be a busy weekend. I have a third painting in the works if I can get it done and dry in time.

Daily Painting - Catching Up and Change

I know I already posted these paintings but I am doing it again - I am busy trying to catch up and reorganize and get back into m y "groove". For some reason I think that if I get caught up with my blog I will feel organized and have a sense of accomplishment and be able to get going again. Each of these 3 paintings are 12" w x 24"high. The first one is oil and the second 2 are acrylic. They were painted for a show which open this Saturday night Aug 23rd at Studio 2nd Street in Encinitas CA. The theme of the show is "Change" and our paintings are to somehow relate to or reflect our concept, definition or understanding of "Change." These are mine. Not only are each individual painting a representation of the idea of change - but the three of them together also represent the and illustrate the change that took place during my process of thinking planning and painting for this show. As I think I sadi before - there will be more paintings in this series.

Nathalie's Painting a Day Preview- Gorilla ACEO and Change 2

Here is probably the last ACEO that I will do for this eBAy contest. The theme is wild animals of course, and right now I am just not too much in the wild animal mood - actually I am just grumpy again from lack of sleep. The color on this gorilla isn't quite right - it is done on a tan card - so the white should really look more tan.
Mr.Gorilla will be available for bidding on Aug 15th - do an eBay search for ACEO YBA or for me - nathaliesdavis - and it should show up - enjoy all of the wild animal ACEOs too - I am sure there will be some pretty nice ones as there are some pretty talented artists in this group that do animals a lot.

...and here is Change 2 - the second in my doorknob/change series. It is acrylic on canvas and like this one too! I need to go try to get a nap - I just have not been sleeping for days and I am feeling pretty miserable. Oh well....

Nathalie's Painting a Day Preview-Standing Egret ACEO and Change

So here is another ACEO preview for the ACEO YBA promotional contest on eBay. The contest doesn't start until August 15 so I am holding them until then. It will be available for bidding right after midnight .
Standing Egret ACEO
2.5" x 3.5"
Acrylic on Card

Change 1
Oil on Canvas
12"x 24"
Well that looks weird - the top painting is itty-bitty and the bottom painting is 2 feet tall!

This is the first of 3 paintings (so far) based on the theme "Change." You can't tell but the background is a shimmery gold. I like this painting a lot - I like the feeling I get when I look at it. I am now busy working on paintings for a fund raiser gala put on by "hearts on fire" jewelry company and San Diego Fine Art Society- It is for art for a hospital or clinic...I should read the flyer again I guess. It doesn't really matter - I was asked - I said yes - it's for a good cause and now I need to get busy painting something! I thought I knew what I wanted to paint but it is not working out so well - I hate when that happens.

Nathalie's Painting a Day Preview- Egret ACEO - Available August 15th

Egret ACEO
2.5" x 3.5"
Acrylic on Masonite
This going to be short and sweet since I have so much catching up to do. I did this little guy today for one of the eBay groups I am a member of. It is the "Years Best Art Card" group and the competition starts Aug 15th. The theme is "wild animals." I will be posting this on eBay Aug 15th at 12:01AM Pacific time - or as close to it as I can. In the mean time I have a show I committed to put a piece in on Aug 23 with the theme "Change" - I am going to go shoot the photos of them (I have 3 done) right after I get done here. Also I have a commitment to a fund raiser gala auction and sale for the same date - Aug 23rd and I haven't even started on them - but at least I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. I am still trying to figure out how I am going to resolve the eBay and gallery conflict too. OK - 'nuff fer now. Oooooh - this little egret guy is so cute - I just love him!!

I am coming back

After totally losing control of my schedule, time and space it's time to return to my routine. Why is it so darn hard to get back into doing the same thing I was used to doing only a few weeks ago. Not being a fan of routine and repetition to start with may have something to do with it. I have paintings to photograph, and so much to catch up on. In the meantime - maybe you'd like to entertain your self with this test to see if you are right or left brained. I've done a bazillion of these over the last 5 decades and it always pretty much turns out the same. I am not one or the other - and this test was right on the money again. You try and let me know the results.

#32 Yellow Pear on Red ACEO Daily Painting a Day from Nathalie S Davis

#32 Yellow Pear on Red - ACEO
Oil on Masonite
Just got back from a great dinner at one of the best Italian restaurants in Carlsbad - we had 16 of us there, only missing 2 I think - of those out here in CA right now. Annette and the 2 boys fly out tomorrow and we get Mom and Dad all to ourselves for a couple of days.
I don't know what this painting looks like on your screen but this is screaming red on mine right now - way too bright! I will reshoot it tomorrow and see if I can't get it to look better. I got all finished with it and while I was hurrying around trying to get cleaned up to go out to dinner, I knock this painting and my tea and a bunch of other stuff off the table. Of course the painting landed face down! Fortunately I had it tape to another board and that board had just enough other stuff stock to it to leave space so the little painting didn't really touch the floor! Just had to fix a couple of little marks. Whew! I am off to visit with Mom & Dad now- then to bed.

#31 Rain Man - New Daily Oil Painting a Day and Photoshop Class

Finally! - I didn't get this posted last night because I couldn't upload the pictures - YAY! it's working! So here is last nights post today.

#31 Rain Man - Quick Sketch Portrait
Oil on canvas
6" x 8"

(approx. 15.24 x 20.32 cm.)

Available Here

I just love having fun and for the past few days I've been having me some. I did these quick sketch portraits which was a blast. I had really goofy colors with me in class, I don't know how that happened - but I did not have any of my normal dependable trustworthy colors - so I just played and winged it. SO much fun, I think I laughed out loud a few times. It feels so good to get back to painting - that sort of amazes me, I mean that I've been missing it so much. I am having a good time with Rick's family and stuff too. It's been very relaxing going up to the lake. Now Rick has taken all of next week off! That'll be great - I hope to get up to Laguna Beach and look at galleries - during the week - on weekends during the summer you absolutely cannot move it's so crowded.
Also I've been having a BLAST with my Photoshop class that I am taking through the community college - but all on line. I wasn't sure how I would like that but I LOVE it and can't wait to sign up for the next one. Here is an example of what I've been doing. This assignment was to make a CD cover front and back, including the little folding flaps on the back. CD's and bands aren't really my thing - so I decided to make a cover for a photo CD or DVD for the family vacations. We had to try different filters and layering and stuff - I LOVED making this - I LOVE Photoshop! Anyway it's my daughters and nieces messing around at the lake and the gun is Eric's influence - being a Captain (as of Aug 1st) in the Marines, an artillery guy and competitive shooter - the girls all found out that they enjoy target practice too. With the theme being MESSY - what could be messier than shooting someone - twisted I know, but I had to come up with something and I was running out of time. I watch WAY too much CSI - Cops - Forensic Files - Bones - NCIS - Criminal Minds - all my favorites - well, after So You Think You Can Dance - which is my most all time best favoritest TV show EVER!!! These projects are posted to a discussion board - and I am finding that my virtual classmates aren't too fond of this cover of mine. I don't care - I love it and I loved doing it. What do you think?

Two New Daily Oil Paintings a Day by Nathalie S Davis

# 29 Green Pear on Dark Pink - New Daily Oil Painting a Day
Oil on canvas board
6” x 6”
(approx. 15.24 x 15.24 cm)

# 28 Pear Reflection on Purple - New Daily Oil Painting a Day
Oil on canvas board
6” x 6”
(approx. 15.24 x 15.24 cm)

Wow, does it ever feel good to get back to painting. This month is so busy - Rick's parents and one of his sister's and her two boys are here visiting and we are having a great time just hanging out and relaxing. Spent the weekend up at the lake again. It's really great but it is keeping me out of the studio, and that makes me antsy. This morning I did the #28 Pear Reflection on Purple followed by #29 Green Pear on Dark Pink. I had started #29 a couple of weeks ago and it just bugged me so I never posted it. This morning I worked on it more, and now I am at least happy enough to get it up here and also on EBay. I really like the #28 Pear Reflection on Purple. I emailed it to show Nathalie (my daughter - yes, we have the same name) and she liked it too - and asked me to set it aside for her. So no EBay for that one! I have deadlines looming for so many things! I have got to get to work and get these painting done for these shows I have committed too! I am disappointed that none of my ACEO's have sold. I have been watching and I see that it is pretty darn important to get these things posted at 12:01AM of the very first day of the contest. That way they go on the first page usually - mine are toward the back and hardly anybody has even looked at them. I think they are bored and tired by the time the get to the page my cards are on. At least I prefer to think that over thinking that they suck and people just don't like them!! - Nah. that can't be it! I am going to make a couple of larger painting from them. I like them.

Nathalie S Davis Daily Paintings a Day; ACEO Dogs

I can't believe I got 10 ACEO's done today - especially with all of the interruptions. I think several might become paintings. Now I am going to bed - good night!

Cut and Paste, ACEO and AC

There's a lot of initials floating around these days - gets on my nerves. Except when it comes to typing. I am not a great typist and I welcome any opportunity to shortcut it when ever I can. So the cut and paste part is today blog entry - pretty much cut and pasted right outta my non-chatty business blog ...again. (I say pretty much - becasue I did add a little to it) Sorry. We had AC installed today (quite a few interruptions)- but made my working on my ACEO's much more pleasant by the end of the day - I have several more to make - finish - in order to make the contest deadline. So here are two ACEO's done while the AC was being installed and cut and pasted from my other blog. Back to work for me....
GOT 2 MORE FINISHED - BLUE DOGS1 and 2

Good Dog 1/2
Good Dog 2/2

Good Dog - New Daily Painting a Day

Hand Colored Digital Print
Acrylic on acid free card stock
ACEO 2.5" x 3.5"
(approx 64 x 89 mm)

This is an original drawing, print and painting signed by me (on the back).
This is a series of two. I drew the dog (from a photo I took), scanned and printed it on acid free card stock, painted it with transparent liquid acrylics, then varnished. I thought the card stock seemed flimsy so I collaged (fancy talk for glued) it onto another piece, so it is double thick, and has the weight and feel more like a playing card.

ABOUT THIS ACEO
This ACEO was inspired by two things. First, I took some photographs over the Fourth Of July at Lake Arrowhead. There was a couple in the shopping village walking 4 of the nicest, most beautiful and well behaved Labradors. Each one was a different color. Of course I had to take some pictures, and that is what inspired me to do this series of dog ACEO's. Secondly, it just happens to fit this months theme for the ACEO YBA contest. Also, these ACEO's also provide a method for me to plan and prepare for larger gallery paintings based on them, sort of like a sketchbook.

ABOUT THE CONTEST

There is a monthly contest starting on the 15th of each month. The winner is the artist whose ACEO gets the most unique bidders. That means the most individual bidders, so a card with two people in a bidding war with a total of 50 votes would be beaten by the card with three bidders with a total of three bids. It's sort of like one vote (bid) per person (bidder). Anyway I thought it would be fun to join in and play.

2008 Years Best ACEO Awards

~ ACEO YBA

This group was founded by ACEO artists and collectors, to create a brand new ACEO awards program/art contest, which began on September 15th, 2008.

The ACEO YBA will:

1 - Recognize and promote our fellow ACEO artists, in a wide variety of ACEO-specific categories... that may not be found in other awards programs.

2 - Increase awareness of the ACEO movement on eBay... thus encouraging new artists and collectors to come and enjoy creating, selling and collecting ACEOs.

3 - Give something back to the wonderful ACEO community of artists and collectors, that we enjoy being a part of on eBay.

#25 Orange Pepper and I am TIRED!!

# 25 Orange Pepper - New Daily Oil Painting a Day
Oil on canvas mounted on Masonite
6” x 6”
(approx. 15.24 x 15.24 cm

I actually did this little painting in the Carol Marine workshop at the Andreeva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe a few weeks back - or is it a few months back now. I don't know, time goes so fast. This painting is varnished so it has a little shine to it, making it difficult to photograph well. It looks pretty good on my monitor - but would look so much better in your house!

I got this posted on my other business-only-non-chatty-blog and then cyber-world decided not to cooperate any more. My photos wouldn't upload and I am too exhausted to fuss with it tonight so I just cut and pasted this from my "business only" blog - thus the explanation for the weirdness of this post. I don't know - maybe it doesn't seem weird to you - it is to me. Maybe repetitious would be a better word. I didn't sleep well last night so now I find myself grumpy and tired and well - grumpy. Painting hasn't gone so well - I have TONS and TONS of domestic BORING chores that have to be attended to getting in my way - holding me down - preventing me from working - adding to my grumpiness. I wanted to upload my latest Photoshop project - because I am proud of it - but I guess that'll have to wait till tomorrow - maybe cyber-world will cooperate with me then - or at least I won't be so tired and grumpy that I can't deal with it. I am going to bed now - good night.

Hybrid Water Cars and Todays Green Pear

I spent - probably wasted - most of my morning reading about and researching kits, systems and information on how to convert your car to a water hybrid. The car doesn't really run on water, but it removes the hydrogen from the H2O and burns that with the fuel, increasing the fuel efficiency of your car. That is a very simplistic explanation, but that is the basic idea. For some reason this fascinates me, (big surprise - practically EVERYTHING fascinates me). I think I read something about this back in the late 60's - when Mother Earth News first came out. Anyway - I really wish my brother were near by. He'd help me build it - he knows everything about cars and fixing them up. In high school he took the automatic transmission out of his perfectly good car and turned it into a manual transmission - just because that was cooler and more fun - and because he could do it. Any way I spent the morning reading about science that I don't quite understand and about engines that I really don't quite get either -and I really am not a car buff, but I think it would be really fun to make one of these converters and try it out. Darn it - everything interests me - there just is not enough time to do everything. That and I like building things and making things and trying things and - well you get the picture. Not enough time.

So todays "Daily Painting A Day" came together like a dream - which was a good thing. I put the spot light really close to the pear and it was cooking it causing it to change colors very quickly - so I had to paint fast. I painted this one on a metallic gold background, and the gold peeks through here and there. I really like this one a lot. So here's where you can find it if you like it too - it's on eBay

I am back - sort of - and #22 Tiny Matt ACEO

I am really dragging my feet getting back into the routine of working. It's not that I don't want to - it just seems that after a break - any kind of break - I have a difficult time regrouping and restarting. I have to work very hard to establish a routine to start with as I am not a routine/schedule person, which drives my girls really insane. They are both planners. In fact one was a professional event planner before she quit to go back to school, and she was my foot-loose and fancy free kid. The other daughter was born while scheduling her own delivery I think. I, on the other hand, thrive by the seat of my pants. Hmmm - maybe that's why they are so good at planning.... So here is todays offering :

I am heading over to eBay to post this right now. You know where to find my stuff if you want it. See all of my links over there on the right somewhere----->

Vacation Pictures, (really just a weekend)

Here we are at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains. We boarded the dogs for a change and drove up on Friday, and go home on Sunday morning - early. This is so nice.

Above is the view from one Steve and Cindy's decks - and right out there is where they shot off the fireworks last night. It was beautiful, and pretty perfect.

They have sail boat races on the lake, and the lake is so full of boat traffic this weekend that they can barely wake board. It is a wonderful break and very peaceful and restful here. As eager as I am to get back to painting - this weekend has gone way too fast!
